Welcome to The Lancaster Company’s June newsletter! What a wonderful, sunny start to the month we’ve had. June is a very exciting month with the arrival of summer, which can only mean we can enjoy those beautifully light evenings again, and suddenly our calendars are packed with fun-filled plans with friends and family. This month we talk all things events related, including some lovely summer party inspired items from our website – picking just a few for the newsletter wasn’t easy but we think we’ve suggested some goodies! We also talk about Father’s Day on 18th June, suggesting a couple of gift ideas plus a recipe for a delicious Old Fashioned cocktail. Read on!
Events in June
‘The Season’ is upon us, a very exciting month full of events such as Royal Ascot, Henley Royal Regatta, Glastonbury – the list goes on! Even if you’re not able to make it to the event, a great way to celebrate is to host a party. I remember a few years ago some friends of ours hosted a Royal Ascot lunch party where we all dressed up and watched the races on a big screen – the sun was shining, and everyone had great fun! If you’re hosting a lunch or dinner to celebrate an event and are looking for any glassware or tableware, we have a beautiful array of vintage items on our website, from cutlery to crystal-cut glasses, and ice-buckets to cocktail shakers. One of our top picks is this fabulous set of eight champagne coupes dating from the early twentieth century.
Another pick from our website is this stunning champagne/wine cooler made from heavy duty cut glass, excellent for keeping those bubbles perfectly chilled.
Father’s Day – 18th June
Father’s Day is fast approaching, if you’re looking to celebrate over a Sunday Roast or BBQ, one of our favourite items is this fabulous vintage carving set in an original silk-lined box, made in Sheffield – the home of cutlery – in 1905 by Frank Wood. It has had very little use and the steel in all three pieces is in good condition. This would make a great gift and one that is useful all year round.
Alternatively, for the father who loves to make cocktails, this set of four silver-plated drinks measures is essential. Two of the measures have handles marked 1/3 Gill and 1/6 Gill. There are also two plain measures, marked 1/3 Gill and ½ Gill (the ½ Gill is also marked VR denoting it was made during the reign of Queen Victoria!). See the below recipe on how to make a delicious Old Fashioned cocktail:
Old Fashioned Cocktail
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon water
- 50ml bourbon (or the 1/6 Gill measure for something a little stronger)
- 3 dashes Angostura bitters
- Orange peel for garnish
Method:
- Muddle the sugar and Angostura bitters in a lowball glass (our Thomas Webb tumblers are perfect for these!), then add the water and stir until the sugar has dissolved.
- Fill the tumbler with ice cubes, add the bourbon and stir until the bourbon is chilled.
- Add one piece of orange peel and stir well (NB. for extra flavour, hold a flame to the orange peel for up to 10 seconds before adding it to the mixture)
- Drink and enjoy!
